Will Hedge Funds see the kind of large redemptions that some are predicting? There are several reasons to think the answer is no.
The biggest reason is that many funds (~50%) are actually generating positive performance, and though some funds are deeply in the red, by no means do they reflect an industry-wide trend. While some tech and healthcare heavy funds have experienced significant losses, strategies such as multi-strat, macro/CTA, and equity quant have performed quite well.
Context matters. While there is a subset of hedge funds that have made headlines for substantial losses, they are not necessarily representative of the industry at large. In this case, those underperforming funds are actually the outliers, while the industry at large continues to deliver.
